SABRINA HALF THOUGHT he’d jump back. Pull away. Run away. Likely followed by a lecture about burying her feelings in distraction.

Maybe she’d kind of hoped for that, because it would make her feel powerful. In control. Maybe even a little superior. And that was what she was after.

She needed to find equilibrium, and the only place she’d been any good at finding that was in the middle of a fight. Win or lose, the physical release of fighting did the trick. It released the tension. Left her loose and ready for the next.

Since she couldn’t physically fight with Connor, there was one other physical interaction they could have that might offer the same results.

But she hadn’t counted on the punch of it. Of him. The way his arms wrapped around her, and to feel the strength there. She hadn’t counted on the rasp of his stubble or the smooth, slick slide of his tongue in her mouth.

Something deep inside of her trembled as heat swamped any thoughts of power and equilibrium. His hands slid up her back, big, powerful, and she found herself simply clinging to him, arms around his neck, like he was some kind of anchor.

His hands tangled in her hair, angled her head to take the kiss deeper. Wild.

It exploded into something bigger than she’d expected. Way bigger than she’d meant. She didn’t feel equilibrium. She didn’t feel power.

She felt lost. Which was what had a tiny trickle of icy fear piercing the fear of warmth. Too much. Way, way, way too much, her brain seemed to scream at her. She wrenched her mouth away from his and fought off the panic when she pushed at him and he didn’t let her go.

But it only lasted a second. Then he was unwinding his fingers from her hair and she was stumbling back.

Get it together.

She was breathing too heavily to hear the sound at first. But Connor seemed fine. Oh, he was clearly affected, but not like he’d been bashed over the head with something he didn’t understand.

He reached over and picked her phone up off the table where she’d laid it next to her computer. He handed it to her.

Her hands were shaking. She knew they would shake even harder if she reached out and took it, but what choice did she have? The phone had stopped ringing, but she took it anyway, fighting with everything she was to keep the tremor out of her hands.

God, what had that been? No one had ever kissed her with all that... What? She didn’t even have a word for it.

Her phone began ringing again. She cleared her throat. “Killian,” she answered, irritated her voice was still rough.

“Sabrina. Thank God.”

“Shay?” Relief would have flooded her, but her boss’s voice didn’t sound all that steady.

“Listen. I don’t know what you’ve found, but Holden’s mission led him to one of the names of the hit man’s target. Unfortunately, we know there’s another hit man and another name out there. We only got intermediaries.
